Rhinoplasty or a “nose job” is performed in people who either have a breathing problem or don’t like the appearance of their nose. Everyone’s concerns are unique to themselves so knowing what bothers you as the patient is critical to communicate to your doctor.

Performing a rhinoplasty is like doing a miniature sculpture that needs to look great on its own, but also needs to fit the face it belongs to.

Different ethnic groups present with very different ideas of beauty and what a culturally beautiful nose should look like. For the surgical artist, no matter their own background, a knowledge of ethnic variations and preferences for beauty is paramount. The best plastic surgeons always have these skills.

If you’re considering a rhinoplasty, there are a few things you should be aware of:

1. The best rhinoplasty surgeons in the world (I would put my results right up there) still have to revise a small percentage of patients to make the result virtually perfect.

2. Not every plastic surgeon is good at this procedure. The best way to find out is to ask him or her if they are the person that would do their wife or their best friend or their spouse’s rhinoplasty and if not, who in their community or elsewhere would they, themselves go to have this work done (I still believe that most competent plastic surgeons are honest and will answer this honestly).

3. Look at the photos, but look at all of their work. Do they have an artistic eye? What does your gut tell you? I recommend understanding board certifications and to use your own research and instinct to judge a person’s abilities.
